A child of a parent or step-parent who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may move to Australia to live with their parent. The child must be single and dependent on the parent or step-parent, under 18 years, a full-time student aged 18 to 25 and financially dependent on the parent, or over 18 and unable to work due to a disability.
Parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens can join their children in Australia subject to the sponsoring child providing an Assurance of Support and the Parent(s) meeting the Balance of Family test. An Assurance of Support is a legal agreement the sponsoring child makes with the Australian Government to ensure any income support provided over a 10 year period to the Parent(s) is repaid.
The Balance of Family test requires at least half of your children live permanently in Australia, or that more of your children live permanently in Australia than in any one other country. As permanent residents, parents are eligible for same range of benefits as other Australian citizens and permanent residents apart from the Aged Pension for which there is a 10 years waiting period.
If you are engaged to an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, you may enter Australia on a Prospective Marriage Visa and marry your Fiancé. Once you have entered Australia, you must marry within nine months.
Partners of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens are eligible to immigrate to Australia. Married and de facto partners are considered partners in Australian Immigration Law.
